What is a security token?

A security token refers to a device or application that generates a unique code used for authentication. This is fundamental in various authentication processes, especially in two-factor authentication (2FA) scenarios, where users are required to provide something they know (like a password) and something they have (like a security token) to gain access to systems or applications. The security token enhances security by creating a one-time password (OTP) or a temporary authentication code that is only valid for a short period or for a single session, making it much harder for unauthorized users to gain access even if they know the user's password.

In contrast, other options like firewalls, credential management software, and anti-spyware solutions serve different purposes in the realm of network security, focusing on perimeter protection, managing user credentials, and detecting/mitigating spyware threats, respectively. However, none of these functions involve generating codes for authentication in the way security tokens do, underscoring the unique role that security tokens play in ensuring secure user verification.
